If you fill it high enough - the water sprays and spatters everywhere when it comes to a boil. But when it's at a level that prevents the spraying / spattering, it's a bit lower than I'd like for boiling the pasta. It really should have been made with the insert lower to to bottom of the pan, but overall, it does the job and I haven't been able to find anything designed any better so it will do.. With our larger stock pot / strainer we have to keep it in a high (out of the way) cupboard and it's a pain to get out.
